Acting: Face to Face
John Sudol is changing the face of acting...
Acting: Face to Face 2nd Edition
"Acting Face to Face: the Actor’s Guide to Understanding How Your Face Communicates Emotion for TV and Film" is about the Language of the Face - or how the face communicates nonverbally. It is the first book to truly define the significance between acting for the stage and acting for the camera. The actor who has the skill to create and control what his or her face is communicating is the actor most suited to work in front of the camera.
"Acting Face to Face" illustrates why only a small percentage of actors receive the majority of on-camera work. It delivers the tools you'll need to level the playing field. The book contains detailed photos and experiential exercises. It also helps you understand how you personally communicate and what might be missing or misread about your facial expressions, so you can take your acting to the next level.
In this revised and broadened 2nd edition, Sudol has updated and expanded several chapters and added 35 new photos to illustrate the specificity and subtlety of emotional expression. The most significant change is the addition of three NEW chapters including a mini version of Sudol’s proprietary Emotion Screen Test (EST). According to Sudol, he wanted to give all those who read this new edition something specific to take away – action steps that will provide greater insight into how each of us creates and reveals emotion on a truly personal level.
After working with thousands of actors and studying the work of leading researchers in the field of emotions for over 15 years, John Sudol – a veteran actor, director, casting director, Hollywood acting teacher and audition coach – has developed this book series, which literally changes the face of acting. Though developed specifically for actors, this book is also helpful to anyone in the communications business who would benefit from knowing how their face nonverbally speaks to others.
"This book goes beyond what you've probably heard time and again from the most respected, established instructors from the past and present: "If you're truly feeling it on the inside, the camera will pick it up." John's training and this book take formal acting technique a step further with explaining the "Language of the Face," a guide to understanding what you may be missing...
"Understanding who we are, how we react and how our past, psychology and physical make-up plays an integral part in how we're coming across to others will be a game-changer for our craft and auditions...and needless to say, understanding the language of the face is relevant to our lives far beyond acting. Get to know what the top 5% working actors apply fluently to their work and learn the Language of the Face!"

Acting: Face to Face 2
"Acting Face to Face 2: How to Create Genuine Emotion for TV and Film" (AFF2) is the second book in a series about the “Language of the Face” – or how the face communicates nonverbally. Building upon the work and concepts of leading researchers, including Paul Ekman, AFF2 expands upon the science of emotions offering practical exercises to guide its readers to true Emotional Alignment.
"Acting Face to Face 2" is not just another book on acting theory; it's a complete step-by-step course in emotion training. For the first time, you will see how the science of emotion meets the art of expression and can assist all actors in achieving the real and genuine emotion necessary to communicate to the director, producer, casting director and ultimately the audience.
You’ll learn to speak the Language of the Face and implement John Sudol's groundbreaking set of tools for actors and business professionals alike. Sudol explains to readers how to assess their own face and thereby how to control and create genuine emotion for the camera, do it on demand and repeat it consistently. Bottom line – AFF2 contains more of what you were never told about on-camera acting.
AFF2 contains links to videos, detailed photos, audio exercises and worksheets for each of the muscle groups associated with the seven universal emotions- – Happy, Sad, Contempt, Fear, Surprise, Disgust and Anger.
"This book is worth it's weight in gold! It picks up where "Acting Face to Face 1" leaves off. In my opinion, both of these books are 'must haves' for both novice and career actors. They are vital in that they show you how to effectively reveal on your face, what you are saying with your body and voice. We've all heard, and probably been given, the common acting direction – 'Just feel the moment and it will show through your eyes.' A good part of the time, it's just not true!
"Quite often, the emotion that shows up on your face, isn't what you were feeling internally.
"Acting Face to Face" books 1 and 2 will help you, step by step, reveal your facial expressions, meaningfully, and in a way that captures the viewer's interest! Because, we all know – 'If it isn't interesting, you've lost your audience!!' I'm using both books constantly as I develop my character roles, and am seeing dramatic (pardon the pun) differences in my work!"

Awesome High-Level Technical Book on Acting Taught in an Easy to Understand Way
I really appreciate that John included a quick refresher section on the ‘moving parts of an emotion’ in Chapter 3—this was a helpful reminder of all the great knowledge I picked up in the first book, AFF1. John’s writing style is clear, concise, and very easy to read and understand.
What I personally found to be one of the most valuable takeaways from John's 2nd book (this one) was the breakdown in the intensity of emotions being expressed and whether or not they are in alignment with how I really feel – they were not. I was either feeling a lot inside and not expressing enough or the exact opposite; being that I was expressing too much and not feeling that much inside.
This has been very eye-opening as it shows me EXACTLY what I need to work on. No guessing, no wasted time, straight to the point. And I believe that because I know this, the real growth in bettering my craft can begin now. Thank you John!

More than meets the eye. John Sudol has finally ...
More than meets the eye. John Sudol has finally connected the dots for us and once you get it, it just seems obvious.
But there are no shortcuts or gimmicks here, just a clear, succinct uncovering of what we all wish we had known before- how to effectively access and control our facial communication for the camera.
A must read for actors of every level, and even those outside of the acting world. Thanks to John for taking the time to translate the language of the face into a language we can all understand.
